1. About These Terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the WhatsMyArc website at whatsmyarc.com (“the Service”), operated by 4xxi Software Ltd. (“we”, “us”, “our”).
By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
2. What WhatsMyArc Is
WhatsMyArc is a narrative identity exploration tool. Users complete a structured interview about their life story, and our system uses artificial intelligence to analyse the responses and generate a personalised report based on constructs from narrative psychology research.
The theoretical framework draws on published research in narrative psychology. For a detailed discussion of the scientific basis and its limitations, see our Science page.
3. Not Professional Advice — Important Disclaimer
WhatsMyArc does not provide psychological advice, therapy, counselling, diagnosis, or any form of clinical or professional service.
The Service is an entertainment and self-exploration tool. It is designed for personal curiosity and, arguably, as a starting point for self-reflection — not for addressing psychological issues or making decisions about mental health treatment.
Specifically:
- The analysis is generated by AI (Large Language Models) and has not been independently validated as a scientific instrument. There are no published peer-reviewed studies demonstrating that this system produces results equivalent to trained human coders.
- The narrative types and construct scores are theoretically motivated but empirically untested. They should not be interpreted as psychological diagnoses or clinical assessments.
- The report content involves creative AI synthesis that goes beyond what validated coding frameworks specify. It is illustrative, not diagnostic.
- If you are experiencing psychological distress, please consult a qualified mental health professional. Do not use WhatsMyArc as a substitute for professional care.
We are transparent about these limitations because intellectual honesty demands it. For a full discussion, see our Science page.
4. AI-Generated Content
All analysis, narrative type classifications, construct scores, and report content are generated by artificial intelligence — specifically, Large Language Models provided by third-party services. We currently use:
- OpenAI (US-based)
- Anthropic (US-based, accessed via OpenRouter)
Your interview answers are sent to these providers for processing. Your name and email address are not sent to AI providers. We do not use your data to train AI models.
AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies, misinterpretations, or errors. We make no warranty as to the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any AI-generated content. Different runs of the same analysis may produce different results.
We may change AI providers at any time. This will be reflected in our Privacy Policy.
5. Your Content
You retain ownership of the answers you provide during the interview. By using the Service, you grant us a limited licence to process your answers through our analysis pipeline (including sending them to AI providers) for the purpose of generating your report.
We do not publish, share, or make your answers or reports available to other users. When you use the sharing feature, only your narrative type (a general category) is shared — your full report and interview answers remain private.
6. Accounts and Authentication
The Service requires sign-in to prevent automated abuse and ensure quality results. Authentication is handled through our centralised authentication service.
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You must not share your account with others.
7. Acceptable Use
When using the Service, you agree not to:
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose.
- Attempt to interfere with the Service's operation or security.
- Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to access the Service without our permission.
- Misrepresent WhatsMyArc results as professional psychological assessments, diagnoses, or clinical evaluations.
8. Age Restriction
The Service is intended for users aged 18 and over. By using the Service, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
9. Payments and Billing
WhatsMyArc offers a free Quick assessment and a paid Report Package. The Report Package is a one-time purchase (not a subscription) that grants additional assessment credits and unlocks premium report sections.
The price of the Report Package is displayed at checkout. All payments are processed securely by Stripe. We do not store your card details — they are handled entirely by Stripe.
Automatic refund on failure. If the AI analysis fails after all retry attempts, the consumed assessment credit is automatically refunded to your account. No action is needed on your part.
Voluntary refunds. Because the service delivers AI-generated content immediately upon completion, we generally do not offer refunds for successfully completed assessments. If you believe there was a technical error that affected your results, contact us at [email protected] and we will review your case.
EU/UK right of withdrawal. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (UK) and the Consumer Rights Directive (EU), you have a 14-day right to withdraw from a digital content purchase. However, by proceeding with checkout and using the Service, you acknowledge that delivery of digital content begins immediately and you consent to losing your right of withdrawal once the assessment is completed.
10. Intellectual Property
The Service, including its design, code, prompts, analysis methodology, narrative type system, and original content, is owned by 4xxi Software Ltd. and is protected by copyright under UK law.
You may share your narrative type result and link to your type page. You may not reproduce, reverse-engineer, or commercially exploit the Service, its analysis methodology, or its content without prior written permission.
11. Disclaimer of Warranties
The Service and its content are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We do not warrant that:
- The Service will be available uninterrupted or error-free.
- The analysis results will be accurate, complete, scientifically valid, or consistent across multiple runs.
- Any errors or defects will be corrected.
- The Service is suitable for any particular purpose, including any psychological, clinical, therapeutic, or diagnostic purpose.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by the laws of England and Wales, 4xxi Software Ltd., its directors, employees, and contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Service. This includes, without limitation, any damages arising from reliance on analysis results for psychological, medical, or personal decisions.
Our total aggregate liability to you for all claims arising out of or in connection with the Service shall not exceed the total amount paid by you to us for the Service in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the event giving rise to the claim. If you have not paid us any fees (for example, if you use the Service on a free basis), our maximum aggregate liability to you shall be ten pounds sterling (£10).
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
13. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated “last modified” date. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
14. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
